What is a brand, and how do I create one? This is the number one question we are asked by clients—even those who have been in business for a while. ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

01 — Approach and Capabilities

Choosing a graphic designer can be daunting. What if they don’t understand your vision? What if they overwhelm you with too many concepts and decisions?
We’re empathetic and practical creatives, and have developed a process to ensure we’re on the same page from day one. The first step is to meet via Zoom or in person—because email is just not enough to understand your drive and personality.
Once we align and have defined the direction to achieve your goals, we can start designing. Our extensive experience* enables us to be your one-stop shop across digital, print-based and environmental design projects.

  • Take yourself out of the day-to-day running of your business and reconnect with your mission.
Many creative entrepreneurs pressure themselves to create their own branding. We developed a process to give you the time, space and depth necessary to build a considered brand that you are confident to take ownership of.
A visual identity encompasses far more than how you want your logo to look and feel — we’ll go beyond the fun of moodboarding, and get serious about how you want to project yourself and why that is important.

  • Print is the tactile dimension that makes a brand experience truly special. Whether you are self-publishing or need collateral that will be kept, we design print materials with respect for your story.
From menus and catalogues, to cookbooks, reports and service guides, your project can be designed in print with a supplementary digital format.
Each project is defined by your objective and takes on new life as we pour over my extensive collection of magazines, flyers and books gathered from all over the world.

[Business Cards, Lookbooks, Portfolios, Programs, Magazines Books, Reports, Stationery, Specialty Print, Branded Collateral]

  • Shape your virtual reality. Create a uniform digital presence that aligns with your visual identity.
A large part of my process is selecting typefaces with an emotional essence that connects with your personality.
With custom Squarespace website design, you get a website that is easy to use and not limited to the restricted typefaces and style of a template.
Keep the digital experience consistently exciting with branded digital assets and downloadables.

[Customised Squarespace Websites, eDM Campaigns, Document Design, eBooks, Service Guides and Price Lists, Worksheets]

WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CREATE—YOUR PROJECT DESERVES A team WHO INTENTLY LISTENS TO WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE.

02 — Design Process

We believe that the creative process must be driven by logic. Beyond dreaming together, we do important groundwork that brings clarity to your overall vision. Whether we are working on your brand, an editorial project or a website, your project will encompass three considered layers of thought.

01 — Your Purpose
To start, we turn the spotlight on you. We get to know you and your business, so we can truly understand the why, what, who and how. As we define the purpose of your project, you can trust us to listen first and deliver feedback with 100% honesty. This is as much for our benefit as yours—our clients regularly comment that this part of the process brings them clarity and direction for the future.
02 — Cultural Depth
Once we have tuned into who you are and what you need us to bring to your project, we start researching. Our cultural vernacular brings depth to the process, paired with strategic thinking. This process takes us deep into typography, emotional cognisance and your industry. We distill all this research and inspiration into a layered strategy for your project. This step is directly guided by the ideas, values and goals set forth in stage one.
03 — Refined Approach
One of Frankie’s favourite quotes is by J. Franklin, who said: “Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance.” Harnessing our love for detail, we finesse your design until your brand is true to who you are. Whether it needs to be cleaner, lighter, friendlier or more confident—we won’t present your design concept unless we are confident that the intention of the design is clear. This final stage allows the nuances to shine and leaves room for your story to be seen and heard.

  • Before embarking on the design, it is vital that you are clear on your business foundations, i.e. knowing your ‘who, what, why’—and for how much.
You’ll need a validated business idea, ownable business name, clearly defined target audience, market tested for viability, business set up, business plan, budget, timeframe, launch date etc.
We will work together to ensure your business foundations are solid before we get visual.

  • This first part of your design journey is all about bringing your business to life with considered branding.
We will define a clear brand direction to enable you to define your identity beyond the key visuals (logo, fonts, colour palette)—icons, social media assets, printed collateral, templates etc.
Your brand foundations and design are the first key milestone needed in your project process—everything else will flow from here.

  • Don’t underestimate the importance of well written content and messaging.
Even the best visual identity can’t stand up on its own if your values and purpose aren’t conveyed properly (verbally or in written content), or if the spelling/grammar needs work.
Begin the content writing at the same time as branding or slightly after if your copywriter wants a general visual style to be inspired by.

  • You’ve invested in quality branding, ensure it shines with beautiful photography. Copywriting and design are easily let down if your images don’t convey your message aesthetically—You want your images to be compelling and aesthetically consistent to connect with your target audience.
If you need product photography, you’ll need to start this after branding/copywriting and packaging design.
However, if you need only headshots or general imagery, you can generally get started following your brand direction moodboards.

  • A key element to your business strategy, social media set up/design can come towards the lend of your brand design phase. It will use a combination of the above elements which means it’s a great one to start after all other design elements have been finalised (but ensure it’s set up before the website kicks off).

  • The final touchpoint to be designed — your website should be the very last piece to the puzzle, but by no means is it the lowest priority.
Your website is your digital home for your beautiful branding, copywriting, photography and social media which means it needs to have only the best content added to it.
A custom designed site that clearly conveys a uniform digital presence that aligns with your visual identity will allow you to build a connection with your ideal audience, inspire trust and convert them into paying customers.

04 — COMMON QUESTIONS / VISUAL IDENTITIES

  • Brand design and strategy are the foundation of your business. It’s so important to get this right to ensure that you connect on an emotional level with your audience and tell a story. It’s an investment in your business that will show its worth every time a customer and interacts with your brand. We have developed each stage of my process to bring greater insight into your brand vision, values and direction. This insight and strategic guidance are what makes bespoke design so effective.

  • This depends on the scope of your project. A small start-up business will have very different needs or budget from an established business looking to rebrand.
We’d rather quote for what you need—specifically tailored to your unique situation—rather than offering a generic package.
That said, for a comprehensive brand with relevant positioning, messaging, brand assets and execution (rather than just a logo/type/colour combination) you should plan to set aside from anywhere between $8,000 and $20,000 upwards depending on your project scope.
Let’s chat about your project needs and budget!

  • Payments are typically broken into three parts. There is a 50% non-refundable deposit that needs to be paid up front in order to secure your booking.
The remaining project fee is split into two payments due upon the completion of the concept design, and upon the completion of the design, prior to handover of your final art.
(Your specific project terms may very.)

  • A non-refundable initial payment of 50% is required prior to starting your project. Once your project has commenced, we reserve time in our schedule for you and will not accept any other projects in this timeframe (this ensures you receive the time and attention you deserve).
If you were to cancel your booking after our agreement is finalised, we are left with an empty project calendar.
To ensure we don’t end up in this position, we make sure we are on the same page from our very first conversation.

  • Whether we are working on a new brand, website or publication, the project needs a purpose or goal to be successful. We need to connect with this purpose in order to understand how it relates to your story and your audience.
If this foundation isn’t well rounded and established, there will be little substance to attract the attention of your audience. We want to make sure that you can make a lasting impression, and to do so, we need to dig deep.

  • Moodboards are an essential part of the design process. They set a tone and direction for the project and help align aesthetic, colour palettes and personality before starting on detailed designs. They are a great way to ensure We are on the same page as you from the very start.

  • By the time we begin work on your logo concept, we know you really well. We will have discussed which styles you like and, importantly, which direction best suits your brand and customer base.
we do not work in isolation from you—you have a lot of input in setting the creative direction, and sign off on all brand strategy decisions before we start designing your logo.
We draw on the moodboards you have signed off on, the creative direction we have discussed and all of our briefing materials to create a carefully thought-out concept, rather than a number of concepts crafted without as much attention to detail.
We also go through up to two rounds of refining this concept to make sure your feedback is taken into account.

  • If for some reason you just don’t connect with your logo concept, we retrace our steps to identify where you feel we strayed off the path. we will create one more concept for you for free within the pre-approved direction.
However, if you have a change of heart and turn your back on the direction we agreed on together, we’ll still create a new design for you, but there will be additional costs involved in resetting the design direction and developing the new concept.
The good news is that we have yet to have a client who doesn’t like their logo concept!

We’d rather quote for what you need (specifically tailored to your unique situation) rather than offering a generic package.

  • It’s simple … nothing beats the simplicity that Squarespace offers as an all-in-one platform; you don’t have to subscribe to a lot of other software. Small- and medium-sized businesses need to get started fast and put their offerings out there at the soonest possible time — Squarespace has everything you need to do so in a very professional way.
It’s beautiful … the back-end interface is beautifully designed, so it’s much easier for you to use and update your site themselves. You’ll hear that WordPress is superior in terms of SEO because of a plugin, but if you gets overwhelmed and would rather not blog, that’s worse for SEO. If you are motivated to update your own blog because of how the interface looks, then Squarespace is definitely for you. Squarespace puts premium on design; you’ll notice how Squarespace images are crisper than most images in Shopify or WordPress websites.
It’s secure … only in-house developers get access to the code and run the updates for us; they don’t support third-party software apart from pre-approved extensions. If you would rather not take care of monthly maintenance of the site to make sure plugins aren’t bugged, then Squarespace might be perfect for you.
It’s bespoke … wait, what?! Squarespace’s templates are limiting only if not customised with through code; enter your stand-out Squarespace designer (aka Studio Neubau), here to help you make your vision a reality.

  • While Squarespace is robust and powerful, there are times that it isn’t the best fit for your needs. That said, Squarespace is constantly evolving to soon support the following: memberships, paywalls, or restricted content areas. (The exception is Customer accounts for Commerce plans. This can also be achieved with Memberspace), inventory management software or point of sale systems. Do check in on what the latest features and functionality have recently been added to Squarespace’s capability before deciding if it’s the platform for you or not.
Here are some instances when other platforms may be better for you: WordPress, for blogging as a business; for bloggers whose main source of income comes from ads; Shopify for advanced features like multi-currency selector, product simulator, advanced tax calculations, more payment gateways, and bundling options.
    (see Squarespace Feature Overview)

  • You must have all website content (imagery and text) ready to go by our agreed upon start date. Failure to do so could result in rescheduling the project to a later date and/or a restart fee.
The best projects are well thought out and prepared before any designs are conceptualised. When the project goals are finalised before the project, we are working with a clear direction, purpose, and mission.
If you pay your deposit to book your spot but then do not complete your project ‘homework’ or do not commit to having your content ready to go, you will be bumped to the next available spot and required to pay an additional 25% re-scheduling fee to re-book your project back in.

  • Website hosting is a service that allows you to post your website onto the Internet — think of it like the “land” or space where your website live. In this case, Squarespace is your website host (a platform that provides the services needed for your website to be viewed in the Internet) and you will need to purchase a hosting plan in order to launch your site (like purchasing ‘land’). A Business Plan can be purchased separately by you (see Squarespace Hosting Fees).

  • No. For hosting, you will need to purchase a Squarespace hosting plan (We always recommend the Business Plan) separately and we go through this process when you are ready to launch your site.
For domains, you will need to purchase your own domain name and provide us with the permissions to access the account (if you do not purchase your domain through Squarespace).
Disclaimer: Studio Neubau is not responsible for server downtime, software issues or any other compatibility issue that may arise after the launch of the site from your hosting or domain provider.

  • For every site package, we can upload up to 3 blog posts and 10 products if included in the site design scope. If you need more formatted, the work will be quoted at our current hourly rate.

  • Generally not. I am in charge of the design of your website and the look and feel of the visuals. Photo editing, photography, and copywriting are not included.
If you need a wordsmith, I have a number of fabulous copywriters that will be able to fill your site with amazing content.
I collaborate with some great photographers, retouchers and stylists who’d love to create some stunning and professional photography for you to do your new website justice.
Let me know if you would like to add these services.

  • Included in all our website packages is basic SEO set up to optimise your website to the best of our ability.
Writing for SEO is not included and is best done by your copywriting professional.
If you require additional, specific or on going SEO services we would recommend getting in touch with an SEO expert who can give you specialist help.

  • We don’t offer ongoing maintenance services as our goal is to for you to be independent, and able to take charge of your site.
We will therefor always include a Squarespace training session (via Zoom or in person, if you’re a Meanjin local) to go over every part of your site and how to edit it.
As a repeat customer we will always try and accomodate any future edits and additions to your site as a priority, conveniently charged at our hourly rate.
